Planning on going out, weather willing, next weekend to the nearshore reef. From browzing for a couple years I feel I got a good idea of how to draw up the spades and catch them. Are they on the Nearshore reef now? Also I hear use small hooks. What would be considered a small hook? Size 1 or 2 Trigger hook or what? Also is line visibility crucial or would the 20lb line on my bigger spinning set ups work as well? Was thinking about taking a couple striper rods with 12 lb test. Thanks guys.
You need to use circle hooks

Are they on the nearshore thick right now?

I haven’t targeted them yet this year so I can’t answer either way. Give it a try. If you wait till June 1 you can keep some BSB too. I’m my little bit of experience, its not as easy as you’d think to raise a school and keep them there. Have a plan and be prepared to increase your success.

Going with a guy from my company who lives in Summerville on his boat with his son so we are just going out for a good time. May pull the channel for Kings a bit and we are going next Sunday so BSB will be in season. Do you have to use circle hooks still like for sheepshead? Imma update all my regs before going.

Yep, they’re part of the snapper grouper complex so circle hooks are mandated. It’s not a big deal, though, as small circles (like a #1 or #2 Owner mutu circle) work really well.
Nice read.

I got some GULP Fiddler crabs I was gonna put on a bottom rig and try. What are the odds you get a red or convict from dropping those down?

I am pretty certain you will not find spades on the nearshore!
You should find your sheepshead and BSB there though!

Do you think the GULP fiddlers will produce sheeps or probably just BSB? I’m fine with a cooler full or what not of BSB. Hopefully we find a king bite and maybe a lost Cobia. All about going out for some fun though. The catching isn’t all that important although I am prepping to try and fill a cooler for a fish fry party not long afterwards.

There are spades at the nearshore, they just get a lot of pressure. You should be fine with 20lb outfits as that is what we use. They are a lot stronger than what you think. They can be caught on the 12lb outfits, but don’t be surprised when they take you down to the structure and break you off. We caught a good many a few weeks ago out at the 60. After catching them on the 20s we decided to have some fun with the 12lbs and it was tough to turn them. Take a wire coat hanger with you open it up leaving the hook part, thread on some jelly balls (we usually put 5 or so on) bend the other end with pliers to form a small loop and tie to a rope off the back. You can thread on an egg sinker to weigh it down if you like. We will also tie it off to a rod and when anchored over the structure lower it down over the structure and watch for the tip to move very slowly reel it up to bring it closer to the surface with spades in follow. Cutting up some chunks of jelly balls and chumming with that helps keep them feeding. Bait up small circle hook with jelly ball chunk free lined or with a small split shot and have some fun.

We loaded the boat with spades a few days ago, absolutely wore them out. They hit tiny pieces of shrimp much better than they did the jellies.
Interesting. Tried the Jelly ball Wednesday with no luck at the Gordon! Shrimp is sumpin I never tried for Spades! Thanks!
Ditto on the shrimp.
Was spadefishing at 4KI last year. Spades all around us but they wouldn’t touch the jellyball chunks we were fishing with. Switched to the shrimp we just happened to bring with us that day and it was game on.
for sure on the shrimp… We had a lot better luck once we pealed them as well. Caught so many last year at the anglers reef? after an a couple hours we were worn out!
I love a spadefish. I reallllllllllllly want to turn my buddy from Georgia on to them.
Umm, you gonna eat that?
