Any of you all coming back from offshore seen spanish mackeral in the shipping channel or within 2-3 miles of the jetties yet this spring? Was thinking about trolling or sight casting them later in the week. Don’t want to waste the gas if they’re not around yet.
kibler, you have a PM
saw the spanish within a few cans of the jetties this past Friday early in the morning…looked like they were out there
Saw spanish jumping all over around the 9, 10 can this past sat in the morning. Picked up one on the surface with a heavy jighead/mullet jerkbait. Fast retrieve was all it took. Had three hits before making a connection.
We saw several schools Saturday on the way back in.
Saw them pop up 100 yrds past the end of the jetties on Saturday when I was taking a booze cruise. A few people on the boat had never been out of the harbor so we made a jetties trip. The fish weren’t big, but they were spanish and hammering glass minnows under birds.
with the spanish, how long of a wire leader are you all using? or just go with 30-40 lbs of mono leader?
heavier mono does a great job of eliminating twist for us. planers have about 25-30’ of 40lb mono behind them… anything lighter seems to mess up the line after a while.
for casting, always straight braid to spoon for me… had one bluefish cutoff last saturday that cost me a Deadly Dick, but that’s the nature of the game.
they’re all puking bellies full of anchovies right now, so “match the hatch”!
