I’ve been dying to get out to the shipping channel for early morning spanish mackeral in my bay boat…but this 15-20 knot wind has been really limiting! Doesn’t look like it’s gonng let up any time soon.
Has anyone seen diving birds around castle pickney on the outgoing tides recently that would indicate any spanish mackeral in the harbor?
Any other pointers about spanish fishing when the water is too rough to get my bay boat out to the C bouy?
This is the time of year the spanish show up in the harbor. Some things to try when you are trolling are either a small in line sinker or a planer to keep your lure down a little. The spanish do like fast baits so don’t be afraid to keep your speed up. I just use my tachometer to judge my speed 1200 to 1400 rpms but I think thats about 5-7 mph.
I finally saw a few diving birds yesterday afternoon on the incoming tide.

claim- were there spanish? I saw a pack of diving birds out there last summer and it was a massive school of 6-8 inch bluefish.
I dunno. I’ve been in the harbor several times over the past several weeks and the day I saw the birds, was the first time I’d seen the birds. So, it’s something to check out. Maybe.
