Anyone know productive fly patterns for the spanish mackerel? I want to ease up on schools and cast into them.
Please post a photo of the pattern and describe how to work it.
Thanks in advance.

I tie flies like this for spanish.
Or… just use a Clouser.
Sinking line. Fast strip. If fast strip doesn’t work… go slow.
Nice fly!

Shoot… I thought it was going to paste the name of the fly with the picture. I don’t want anyone to think it is my fly. It’s the pattern I tie my fly after. Here is a link for some information on the “Boylermaker Albie Fly” by Jaime Boyle.

I didn’t have a picture of the ones I tie. They aren’t this ‘pretty’. But it’s something to shoot for.
Those flies look real nice. I normally use clousers tied with synthetics beause they’re easy to tie. At the rate the flies get torn up, it really saves alot of time.
I have had better luck with crazy charlies and similar bonefish flies. Too many short strikes with clousers with a torn up fly to show for it. Give it a try next time.

What colors? Do you add flash?
What about the presentation?
Thanks,

That is a good looking pattern. What is your favorite color combo? What hook size do you like?
Thanks,

For spanish I use chartreuse over white with a #1 hook. Strip fast after letting the sinking line sink. If fast doesn’t work… strip slow. I don’t throw unless I see them. Bolye uses #4 for albies. I think that is too small for spanish. Just my opinion.
I might try red over white. Not kidding.

Thanks, I will try it this weekend.
Charleston Angler sells a gummy kinda’ bait fish fly. It looks just like the silver-side bait the spanish are killing at the jetties. I threw it at them a couple weeks back and had plenty of action. As said before, strip fast. Spanish are high speed predators that like hitting moving bait.

How do those hold up? I like to tie my own so I have not tried one. I found a source for the material but never bought any since I wasn’t familiar with the pattern. As I recall, the stuff was kind of pricey too. I figured they would get torn up pretty quickly. Maybe my assumption was wrong.

It depends. I’ve had them bitten in half which, obviously, renders them useless very quickly. Anytime you have a soft plastic in front of a toothy fish, you’re doing to tear up some lures/flies. But, short of that happening, they hold up pretty well. I’ve used them for casting at the rocks at the jetties for blues and a for spanish. I’ve had to discard several due to the hooks corroding more than the ‘gummy’ stuff deteriorating.
Also, I’ve had several different soft plastic lures and flies glue themselves to each other in the tackle box. They must be segregated.

Try a Crease Fly tied on a size 2 or even size 4 hook. Nothing fancy. White foam. Chartreuse tail. My favorite.

Hit a 19" Spanish this morning using a home tied Hamilton Copperhead on a #1 hook. Lost the fly to something much bigger half an hour later.
