I know the topic of Spanish Mackerel has been brought up a few times, but I wanted to make a thread of info on them. Looking to catch some this summer. From what I’ve read on here and various sites is that the best way to find them is to find birds diving/schools of menhaden. Trolling works too, but finding them is most productive from what I’ve read. I know they make their way into the harbor, but I was planning to go out farther towards the Jetties. Silver Clarks Spoons are the go to according to tackle shops but I’ll get a few shiny topwater lures before I go. I remember two summers ago hearing they were hot out by the Morris Island Lighthouse, but I never made my way over there. Also, hear you can catch them off the Folly Pier. Please share any information you have on them and I will continue to do my best sharing my info.
Number 2 planer and gold 00 clark spoon
I bought a real simple 1oz lead jig with some flashy tape on it a while back. It casts a mile when casting to schools…cast and retrieve super fast and hold on. Clarks are good for trolling but you need something heavier to cast when you spot a school
Last summer I watched a guy who had no clue what he was doing fill up a cooler with Spanish using cut mullet on a dropper rig with 18oz of lead (not literally) on the folly pier.
