Spanish mackerel

I recently caught a few spanish in Florida and am wondering where I can catch them here in Charleston, I am looking for spots inside Charleston harbor and close to the beach, any advice on lures and rigs is helpful to.

Find the birds in or just outside the harbor and you’ll probably find the spanish. I like throwing Kastmaster spoons at them, but when they’re eating they’ll eat almost anything that resembles a bait fish. The ones we caught deeper this year were all eating glass minnows…and coughing them up on the deck.

Had a blast this morning catching them by Castle P. Caught them till 10 AM. I used a glass minnow imitation. Trout Eye Finesse jig with a Z-Man StreakZ 3.75 in white. Haddrells is now carrying our finesse jigs BTW. Greg Peralta turned me on to using this setup and it works great. Will have some pics posted tonight on our IG page @eyestrikefishing

Do Spanish Mackerel have any sort of feeding pattern? Morning/Evening? High/Low tide? Never fished them, but I’m intrigued.

Morning and evening tend produce the most. Generally if find bait you will find them midday as well though.

I fished castle Pinckney today around 3ish and the Spanish weren’t there. I’ve seen them most often in the mornings when it is calm.

The last couple of times I went looking for SM, they were well hidden. I’ve never fished for them in the harbor, usually get outside the jetties and start looking for the birds.

I’ve heard they are everywhere off the beaches now.

Good to know. Supposed to try and get out Sun AM if weather permits and will be looking for them.

Yes. We ran into massive school of them off Folly last week.
