spansh makerel

hey guys a buddy of mine gave me some tips on catching spanish but i was curious about the times, he said they were catching them early in the morning btw 7-9 but didn’t know the tide, i told him the incoming may have been at that time that day, so does it just have to be a early am incoming tide or will they bite in the evening as well.

I’ve caught Spanish any time of day … look for bait & birds and use a small bait. They love a fast bait.

Thanks, Captain Ross

Gotcha plugsssssssssssss and clark spoooooooooonnns

-Wishes Charlotte was 3 hours closer to the ocean…-

I circled Castle Pickney this morning trolling spoons, no SM sightings or bites. I caught a 20" Spanish about 10 AM inside North jetty at ocean entrance. I was trolling a 6 inch gold and silver spoon about 70 feet behind the boat at 3-5 mph. Couldn’t manage to catch anymore, but there were schools of 1-5 pound bluefish and sometimes something bigger jumping at the end of the North jetty. The schooling seemed to stop by about 1130 today. I also rescued a 29 inch redfish out of the rocks, my Clark spoon had snagged on the rocks about 15 feet deep, when I got it loose, it was wrapped around someone’s broken line with a bottom rig attached to the very happy to see me red fish, he is a predator again.

dang all I every get is a ball of old line and maybe a rusty hook

When I used to run a charter boat we made a lot of 4 hour Spanish Mackerel trips and could usually limit out in the summer months.

We pulled nothing but silver Clark spoons with a red bead, of various sizes, match the bait. Start with mixed sizes and switch out to what is working. When you catch the first spanish, give it a good squeeze and it will regurgitate what it’s been eating. Not pleasant, but wash your hands and get over it, then use whatever size Clark spoon you have that closest matches the glass minnow size. I would start by pulling 1 spoon on a number 3 planer, 1 spoon on a number 2, 1 spoon on a number 1 planer and 2 spoons flat.

Yes, they love a fast bait. Troll fast, 7 knots minimum speed and don’t be scared of 10 knots.

Go to the cans and look for birds. Clarke spoons no leader. I like the longer ones which reduces cut offs. Kind of just running until you find them .

Spinning gear such as you would use for trout or smaller reds.
