Common Snapper

I was telling someone the other day that as a kid, we used to see turtles all of the time. Box turtles crossing roads, snapping turtles in the swamps. You don’t seem to see them like you used to. For quite a few years, we had a box turtle with 3 legs living in our yard. we’d see “Stumpy” a few times during the year when he would crawl out from under the Ivy but, we haven’t seen him in a while now. Wonder what happened to that little dude.

A couple of decades ago, I would have argued with you that your pic was an Alligator turtle. I was raised up calling those by most everyone in this area that. DNR agent informed me S.C. doesn’t have Alligator turtles and like you stated… Common Snapper. Also learned that these guys are more aggressive than an alligator turtle. I know they have one long neck and don’t grab it mid shell. They will eat baby ducks.
