Looking at getting my first speargun, not really sure what I need. How does the size of gun correlate to what I’m shooting? I’m not gonna be shooting anything large
Thanks

We just had that discussion. Got a little heated… worth reading
First question… What WILL you be shooting? Second question… Freediving or SCUBA?
Just want a gun I can take with me to Florida from time to time, don’t really have a target species in mind.
Mostly freediving although I am open water certified.

Just reef fish, I can dive to about 30’. I don’t plan on shooting any over 10lbs

Right now I think a 30in is what I want, thoughts?
I have a Mako Predator Pro railgun that I could get rid of. It is approximately 4’ in length. (I’d have to check further to get exact size) I used it on a vacation in the Keys for the week and have not used it since them. PM me if you are interested.

30 inches might be a bit too short. I guess it depends on how close you can get. I’ve got a short gun of similar size, but it doesn’t have much range, and mine is kind of crappy. That would be for small fish only.
I personally prefer the 100-120 cm euro guns or around a 45-50 inch American guns.
My current favorite all around gun is my JBL woody sawed off magnum. I swapped the 20 inch bands for triple 16s. It will easily take down a grouper, cobia, or even a big reef donkey.
My second favorite is my Mares Cyrano 970 pneumatic for smaller fish like spades, triggers, or sheeps. The pneumatic guns reload very quickly. They have plenty of power, but they’re not very popular. I don’t think I’d shoot anything big with it. It’s running a JBL spear, since the Mares spear got mangled.
I have two bigger guns, but they just seem like overkill. Maybe if I were targeting sea monsters…
Are you going to be shooting here at all? Just FL? Just free diving or Scuba? Inshore Spadefish/Sheepshead or offshore Grouper/Hogfish? Pelagics? Dolphin/Wahoo/African Pompano/Cobia, etc…? Those will all determine the right gun. Most people buy guns that are way too small. Traditionally, divers around here that are proficient with offshore stuff buy Commercial Rhinos. You can switch back and forth between freeshafting and lineshafting with the Rhinos but I actually prefer a different gun for Pelagics. Answer the questions and I’ll give some further info.
