While doing a little research for a trip next week I ran across this photo.

I don’t know the back story. Not really sure how it makes me feel but I was in awe non the less. Thought you might enjoy.
And, NO, my trip will not include anything like that, hopefully.

Pretty crazy. That remora still doesn’t know what is going on…
If you search on the net you can find all about it. I’ve met the camera man who filmed it and the short version is that they didn’t plan to have to kill the shark but it came in hot and they had no choice. Once they had wounded it they felt obligated to finish it off. The camera guy’s biggest regret was to release the footage because they got a storm of angry internet retards who wouldn’t stop harassing them.

Funny I remember when this happened and there was a way different story that didn’t involve any self defense from life threatening sharks.
edit: photo shouldn’t be on the internet anyway so not point in spreading it around anymore.
OK so just the last part where I said he regretted posting it was accurate.

Do they not have a "head and fins in-tact" rule on that side?
The other diver is a good buddy of mine Cameron Kirkconnel. I’ve been freediving with him several times in Mexico and on my boat here.
Cameron, Ryan mcguinness, and Craig are good divers and no stranger to sharks. They would not have shot it if they didn’t have to.

Regardless of what some people think, 99% of spearos are very conscious of needless kills and injuries. I’m sure this guy wouldn’t have shot the tiger without good cause. We’ve all had to shoot/kill sharks at one point or another and it’s never fun. If it was in self-defense, which I’m sure it was…it was good of him to finish him off.

I don’t think many people in their right mind would stick a spear into something like that just for sport [:0]

Probably the best point made yet!
That would be on top of my list of things that probably aren’t a good idea. Right up there with poking sleeping bears, kicking bee hives or tugging on Superman’s cape.
While we’re on this topic, I’m an old has been and don’t do much spearfishing anymore, but we used to carry a device called a Shark Dart. It had a big steel needle connected to a CO2 cartridge. Are these still legal and do people still use them?
When you stick a shark in the body cavity with this thing it unloads the CO2. I was once forced to shoot a big Bull shark and it blew up like a balloon, shot towards the surface, then blew wide open about halfway up like it swallowed a grenade. Dang!!

I have not seen or heard about the shark dart in a few years, so I assume they just have a better method than that now. There is a company that creates knifes know as the Wasp Injection Knife. Pretty much the same concept, except in a hand held knife. They have a few videos of people using the knife on watermelons and stuff and showing it explode.
Coastal Prints - Custom Fish Prints! You catch it, I print it. Visit www.coastal-prints.com to view other prints that I have done.
The shark dart was available at the time as a hand held dagger device or as an attachment to a pole spear. It’s hard to picture anything more effective for taking out a shark than that.
I’ve spent thousands of hours in the water and only once felt like I needed to shoot a shark. They are seldom a problem, except to your mind.
