lowtide 2 nights ago, there was a group of kids with a cooler FULL of speckled crabs…had to be over 100. I can’t find any catch limitations on them. Anyone know if they’re any good to eat? I’m sure they make decent bait?
all the above.
speckled or calico but dont think calico make it this far south
just a guess
were they dip netting them out of the surf?
yep, just grabbing them
I’v seen kids on the beach at night with small gohst crags(2-3" accross the back) and often thought the same, Good bait! I wish I had a bucket full of them the next time I go bottom fishing.

We used to catch a lot of speckeled crabs the shape and size of blue crabs on the shrimp boat. I forgot all about them , because one year we we just quit catching them. At about the same time we quit catching the hard headed cat fish in the nets as well as wel as on rod and reel.
after googling calico crab, that is what i remember. and we did eat them.
So thats what kind of crab those shells belong to, always wondered
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.
