speed goes down

last year boat started to get hard to shift an would not hold speed at one level, got the shift problem strighten out with alittle grease
but still not able to get it to stay at same speed. keep droping off an have to throttle up.

anyone with a answer or good guess thanks

An idea on the boat/engine combo may be of some importance here.

First guess, shift cable is bad. You’re living on barrowed time.

My control cables are coming in on Weds, had to order some today, West Marine will match wholesalemarine.com, they have them for $20 a cable … not to bad of a price

If the problem is the throttle not staying in the set position, then there usually a friction adjustment under the top cover. Tighten it up a little and check the stiffness of the throttle movement until it takes fair amount of force to move, but is not overly stiff.

boat is a 96 quest with a 96 200 johnson ocean runner. the throttle handle does not seem to move speed just goes away.

What happens at wot? If it drops back how do you throttle up if lever doesn’t move?

it doesn’t drop when running all out, just when you try an go in crusing speed. say if you get it going 25 it will start droping

maybe a bushing in the binnacle
