Spinning Combo

I am new to boat fishing. I have been looking for a rod and reel combo. The one that really looks interesting is a Penn 750SS m and Slammer rod. I can get one (or two) for $129 each. Is that a good combo??? Any other suggestions?
Since I’m new to this I’m trying to keep my initial expenditure reasonable.
Thanks to all for your opinion.

Where are you planning to fish? That combo is awfully heavy for most of the fishing here. I would look for a 7’ graphite rod rated for 10-17 pound test and 3000 to 4000 sized reel with 20# braid. This will handle creek fishing for trout/reds/flounder to the jetty for the same including macks, sharks, drum, etc. Go to Haddrells, they should be able to hook you up with a good combo that fits that bill for around that price.

My favorite rig I have now is an eight foot Ugly stick in medium action with a Shimano baitrunner size 4500b with 290 yards of #30 powerpro braid on it.
That will cover a very wide range of fishing. Light and sensitive for sheephead with plenty of back bone to handle big redfish/sharks or spadefish.

Umm, you gonna eat that?©

Thanks Hairball and jstrange…your suggestions are a big help! I’ll be going to Haddrells and Charleston Angler tommorow.
