So after inspiration today/yesterday I spun some deer hair, needless to say it’s not perfect, and I am up for critique … I have saw in magazines much tighter and smoother hair after trimmed any ideas, here are the pictures

After spinning these decided to shape them a little differently hence a “Bee Pattern” of sorts
Thanks for any critiques that are provided ahead of time

Thats pretty darn good for your first attempt. The tighter you can pack it, the better. I like to use the tube of a ball point pen slipped over the hook eye to push back on the hair and pack it as tight as possible. This can also help save your thumb if it slips and you jam it onto the hook point.

yeah I have a hair packer that hooks over the hook shank and I packed it as tight as I could and yeah the hook point into the finger, tried that a few times, feels real nice

Looks like you are on to it pretty good. Nice Job. You want criticism so I will say that deer hair is very buoyant, if you are looking for a surface fly you have it. Also be aware that your hook is pretty much buried in the hair so you may miss a strike or 2. Answer, trim it differently to expose hook or use a bigger gap hook. The sink problem, don’t be afraid to tie it less tight (less packed, less hair), you can build a great profile and still let you fly get down to the desired depth by tying a bit more sparse. Depends on what you are trying to do.
I hope that helps.

Yeah Chris, these were just for fun, I won’t be fishing these guys, it was almost an attempt or atleast try to replicate the wonderful art tying of Pat, a guy out of NY I think Scotty D has some of his ties in his shop …
