Spinning for bones

I am going to BVI for the first time sailing with the family and thought I would take my spinning rod and try and play with some bonefish. Cn anyone give me some advice on techniques and baits to try? Also am wondering if braid and floro leaders like I use in SC is OK or if the clear water will mandate some other line?

Get some fresh shrimp, peel 'em, salt 'em in double zip lock. Throw on 1/8th ounce jighead (Owner or Gamakatsu). Has worked for me all over the islands.

^^ditto on that^^ fresh shrimp and jig heads is the way to go.

Thanks guys. Can I use braid and 20# floro like I do in SC ? Also considering the water clarity how long should the leader be?

Seagar Invisex, which is a pure flurocarbon that works great on reels, spinning or baitcasting, has almost no memory, same light refraction as water (invisible) and the most abrasion resistant would be your best bet. However your braid with a, say, 6 foot leader will work fine. Fish in pic was caught on 12 # braid w/ 8 # fluro leader.
The only ways braid excels over fluro,or mono for that matter, is distance of cast and strength. But if you have to use a leader the strength is only relative to that of the leader.

Hello Bob,

What does the salt do for the shrimp? Is a preservative?

Thanks!

I don’t know about the airlines now, but I brought the shrimp in my bag from SC. If I were to fish with shrimp or cut mullet now, I would salt them and keep in freezer. Bob

wait so if you are catching bait to stock up for the winter you would throw some salt in there before you freeze it?

I’d freeze them in salt water/brine to make sure they don’t get all freezer burnt. The fish don’t want freezer burnt shrimp either.

Have been there several times myself, shooting fishing photography.
You can also use the local bait. The day before fishing, walk around the shore and collect several hermit crabs,
let them stay alive, till on the boat fishing, bring along something to crack the shell, pull out the crab alive, put it on
your hook, bones love it. Also, at low tide, collect small blue crabs,1 to 1 1/2" long, same as if you were permit fishing,
hook in corner of shell, near to point,so as too not kill the crab, using local bait, the fish are use too, gets good results.
Have fun, bring back some good photos.

Check ahead of time, but fishing in BVI is a pain in the A**.
Lots of regs, and fees. Just don’t want you to get in trouble.

We actually used Gulp shrimp down in Mexico for bones and they worked.
