Spinning Gear for YFT

Headed to Venice soon and looking to buy a couple spinning outfits to take.
Any recommendations?

This is the combo (Terez and Saragosa) I’ve been looking at putting together for the YFT in the USVI. They generally show up while I’m live baiting for blackfin with lighter spinning tackle so pull out the 50s and try to winch them in before the sharks get to them.

This is tangential to your question, but worth sharing. A friend on Elbow Cay has been catching blackfins on the surface recently, and dropped underneath them, hoping for YFT. Then, whatever was there either spooled him, or broke him off…on his 30 wides with 50# mono. Two or three times. Can’t be certain what it was, but can say they were strong and possibly YFT? My point being, if in doubt, gear up.

Wish we still had some around here.

I’m probably going to get some constructive ■■■■■■■■ here, but I decided to go with the Penn Battle II 8000 instead of spending $400-1400 on a reel. I already fish some of the smaller Battles and like them. Looked at the reviews on the 8000 and they were by and large very good. I’ve caught Cobia, big AJs, grouper and Red Snapper on my 6000s and they have performed well. I’m going to stick the 8000s on either Shimano Trevalas or Penn Carnage IIs in 6/6’4” med heavy.

It’s a great life, if you don’t weaken…

I own both reels, and while the battle is good for catching fish like amberjack, grouper and red snapper it’s drag is not up to the task of going after wahoo or large yellow fin. You are bringing the equivalent of an F150 pickup truck to a Formula One race. Good luck and bring plenty of line because you’ll probably be spooled.

i have had good luck on the old penn 9500 on penn power sticks, so i am sure the battles will be fine. never caught any over 100# with that setup, but worked well for the 60-80lb ones

60lb yft will smoke that battle!!!Atleast move up to the saragosa. The saragosa will run you about $225 terez $299 or trevala for $169. Sells, rap they gave good advice

Okuma azores $100 and 44#s of drag 46 inch per crank.

Stella on Terez or dogfight on black hole magic eye. Have fished both on yft and had no troubles with anything that decided to play  Also, why go so cheap on a reel that you are gonna use target a fish like yft? If you go offshore targeting biggest fish you can’t bring garbage. If I’m spending 100s$ on gas alone to go for fish why would I bring cheap gear that will leave me outgunned?

Reminds me of last trip to canyons for big eye, watched 2 guys with cheap gear spend entire trip on benches because they decided bring gear that cost less than the trip itself. Not trying say go buy most expensive can find, but don’t go fight big boys with lil boy toys.

Stella on a terez loaded with 65lb braid, and I will boat that fish every time.

Caught this guy with a Penn spinfisher 8500 with 80 lb. braid

Broke down and went with the Saragosa 20K. I’m hearing it performs as well as the Stella and it’s much cheaper. Sending the Battle 8K’s back. Anyone use the Spiderwire blue camo line? Having them spooled with 500 yards of that.

I picked up a saragossa 18000 on a callus jigging rod. I hooked a yellowfin last weekend that I got to the transom after 2 hours of fighting (hook pulled) and that tuna was almost as big as the yft we killed that weighed 180lbs. The guy whose boat I was on has a nice collection of stellas and he was impressed with the saragossa. It performed flawlessly.

You will not be disappointed with the quality and drag on that reel.

I like that spider wire better than PP so far. Much better feel and seems to hold up just as well or better. I have no other input on the rest of this gear. Outta my pay grade.

jerry brown decade one. I won’t fish anything else
