I need a new spinning reel. I am looking for something in the 12-15 lb. class for trout and reds. My Shimano and Fin-Nor reels have not held up very well. Is there anything out there for less than a fortune that will perform well? I wish I had my Mitchell 300 from the late 1960’s back. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I’m a little suprised by this post. I have a Saraha 4000 and a Symetre 2500 that I have fished the snot out of. Always rinsed with fresh water and once a month washed with Nor Pine boat wash with wax. And I have had ZERO issues. Bothe are under $100 with the Symetre coming in at $99. Haddrells had them on sale for $79 when I bought mine. My Penn Sargus has performed flawlessly as well. As Too Busy said all will benefit from a good rinse with fresh water.

Ive been looking into getting a new reel as well. I have a Sargus 2000 and its awesome. Wouldnt mind one the next size or two up though for those bigger reds
I use a Quantum Cabo CSP30pts. love the drag system but hate everything else about it. Wash it every time I’m finished but the coating peeled off, there is a sticky spot upon retreive and it’s noisy. I do use a older PENN 1500 (smaller then your looking for) and I love it. It’s older then the Cabo and still looks new and works like it. I am rough on my equipment but do regularly maintenance them. Recommend staying away from the Cabo.
When you catch a bigger red on a light reel you have a good chance of slightly bending the shaft therefore the noise issue you now have. Go up in size and you will avoid such.
I have been a big fan of the Stradics but the price goes up every year. I have had good luck with the Symetries at a better price point. Penn has started to make better product but as with all brands think about 80-90 bucks as a starting price point for a spinner that will last.
I like to shop at Haddrells as my son works there in Mt.P. The other shops are good as well but if you are in Haddrells in mt. p look for Justin and he will show you something at your price point.
i have 13 or 14 cabo’s & bocas from 80’s to 20’s and have been extremely pleased w/ them.fished them very hard.a loose screw here and there but nothing major.like they say, light freshwater rinse.bocas only $120 or so.20’s for trout,30’s 40’s reds(and can also handle big mean fast fish,aj’s tarpon etc.)50’s up to 80,sky’s the limit.one of the best drags ever on a spinning reel.good luck

well said. i bought a handfull of topwaters from him in the spring - not at all what I woulda picked out. the finish is beat off those lures. i had to replace hooks, etc.
the stuff he sold me works. nice young man, knowlegable sportsman.
New Penn Battle’s (as well as several other new models) have arrived here at Haddrell’s, and to be honest I am pretty impressed with their new product. All sizes available, run around the $100 price range…outta check 'em out IMO
swung by haddrells in mt p today and they have the penn af3000 on sale for 100 bucks…I have fished mine hard for almost 3 years and no hassle highly recommend!!!
I have been fishing the Quantum for years and had the same problem with the paint and I rinse with fresh water every time. I just went to Ebay and bought two Stradics and so far so good. I rinse and spray with penns slat block after every rinse.
