Hey guys…any tips on how to reduce the occurance of line wrapping around split shot when using braid/flouro split shot sheepshead rig? Thanks
Im using an Albright knot…dont want swivels…
Are you using the completely round split shot or the ones with the easy open hinge on the back? Maybe try the completely rounds ones, couldn’t hurt to try!

Yep…hinge on the back.
Use a fluorocarbon leader.
Hi Friogatto…yep, already doing that…it seems my braid likes to wrap up around my split shot…
I your weight on the flouro or braid if it is on your braid that is your problem, if not switch to a tiny slip weight and bead, the bead will stop at the not and the slip rig gives a even more natural presentation and better sensitivity in my opinion. If you are fishing bad currents there isn’t much you can do. A light Carolina rig is lethal on sheep head, especially if you have a good rod, I use a bass finesse and drop shot rod. I haven’t got a big boy on it yet but I think its got enough backbone though, but I’ve never caught a big sheep head though just like 16 inches.
Thanks 40…I tried putting the shot below the knot but still got tangled a bit…ill try
your slip weight method…you’re prob right about that rig being
more sensitive…my biggest is 18"…he bent a fast action
pretty good…and i was proud of the Albright knot holding
How long is your flouro leader? I like 4-5ft long leader with the shot about 12-20 inches up from the hook.

I have wanted to try a new rig for sheeps . Tie my hook directly to the leader with a 2 oz. pyramid sinker at the end of the leader. Wadda yall think ?
mikeyloo, might have some problems feeling those light bites. You can use a bead to prevent the sinker from sliding down to the hook while still allowing line to flow freely through the sinker.
mssw07,
Longer leader:
My best guess is…
The fiddler/bait typically has more water resistance causing it to fall slower so your rig will be falling upside down. The sinker placed near the braid/leader knot will fall faster allowing the main line to fold over at the braid/leader knot. The fiddler/bait spins during the fall twisting the leader and split shot which wraps around the braid. So while it may look like the braid is wrapping around the leader or split shot it is actually the leader spinning and wrapping the braid around it’s self.
If you can use a longer leader as suggested above the sinker will be near the middle of the leader. As the sinker pulls the rig down the braid/leader knot will be extended out far enough to keep them from twisting on each other.
Example: 24" leader. Split shot would be placed 8-10" up from the hook.
I had the same problem fishing the offshore wrecks. Resolved by extending the leader material. The actual length will depend on your rig and the way you fish. Find a length that works best for you.
I wrap an egg sinker inline around 4 to 5" above a Mustad Ultrapoint LiveBait hook and I catch’em
Thanks guys…really appreciate the tip friogatto…ill def give your suggestion a try…tired of wondering why the bite stopped only to learn the sheeps were smirking at my hanging pile of braid and leader…my current leader is about a 1.5’…
