Just got the fathers day present! Any suggestions on spooling? It says braid ready but makes more economical sense to put some mono backing on it. Will be used for tarpon, cobia and bottom fishing off shore. Any suggestions?
Penn Slammers are fantastic reels.
You will need to put some mono backing on the reel to keep the braid from slipping on the spool. I would fill most of the spool with braid if you are serious about tarpon. Braid is actually almost as economical as good quality mono because it last a long time. My experience is 3+ years. I would put 50# on that reel, maybe 65 if you are going to do more bottom fishing.

Take it to Haddrell’s West Ashley. They will usually spool it while you wait. I have found it to be better than buying a spool and doing it myself because they take the spool off the reel and put the line on directly from their spool so there is no twist. Also it goes on more evenly and the same tension. Just my 2 cents. Hope you catch a bunch with your new Penn.
