how many times have yall been truly greatful you had an extra 200 yards or so of braid backing on your trolling reels? Having to respool a few and was thinking about putting some 60lb braid i have laying around on there as backing have always ran straight mono for all my trolling reels

All of my trolling gear (personal and charter gear) has braid backing. I like ~2/3 spool of braid and the rest mono.
I use all braid with enough mono or flouro to suit the catch… could be 18 inches, could be 100 ft. Since I set my drag just enough to deal with the trolling force I don’t worry too much about stretch but it’s a critical factor for a lot of people. I’m just getting into trolling but love bottom fishing more.

What size reels are you thinking about adding braid backing to? Have you been in a situation yet where you have almost been spooled?
I like to limit the amount of connections that could possibly fail on my setups. To each their own.

A few years ago I had gotten a couple of squall 50s for swordfishing. Spooling with 80 but didn’t have enough line capacity so I put braid backing. Guy at Hadrells said it was cheaper just to buy the spool of braid rather than by the foot for the quantity I needed, but there would be some left over. They were also relining all 6 of my 30 trolling rods so I told him just to put what was left on one of them. That summer hooked a blue marlin on one of the 30s that headed straight for the horizon. I watched helplessly as the line peeled off before we could get turned around. About the time we go the boat headed toward the fish, I see the last of the mono head through the guides, and you guessed it, it was the one reel with the braid. Had forgotten they had even put it on one of the reels. Released the beast an hour later. Always better to be lucky than good.
