spooling

every once in awhile we may read of someone hooking a big one and getting spooled. Has anyone ever caught a fish with a ton of line hanging before the hook had a chance to rust out?

Yes… 25#+/- red at the grillage. Had a hook hanging from its mouth - I saw this hook and carefully grabbed the other side of the mouth. I didn’t see the other hook hanging down by its belly - cheap Walmart top and bottom rig with BIG giant hooks, one hook in the mouth, one hook hanging free by midsection of the fish, the rest of the “spool” was drifting out in the current.

Welp, I pick up the big fish the correct way, by the mouth and by the belly… the trailer hook found my pinky, the fish twitched and I lost grip - the trailer hook set into my bone, thru my bone and out the other side as the ole red was swimming away - the only thing stopping it was my finger.

I expected someone to answer the OP in the affirmative, but I did not expect this! OOWWWWW

Keep it Awesome!!!

I saw some braided line floating next to a dock; grabbed the line and started wrapping yards and yards of braid around my hand… all of a sudden I get a surprise as a red goes NUTS. I hand lined it to the yak.

Awww hell. Sorry I asked. I feel ur pain

Yes, I’ve caught a 7 1/2 lbs. striper on a bucktail while it still had a big livebait hook it it’s upper lip. I also once caught a nice largemouth bass on a plastic worm that had a chrome and blue Rattle Trap hanging from the corner of it’s mouth. The bass was so skinny that I removed the Trap and turned it loose. Hopefully, it was able to survive. Both of these fish had no line attached to the tackle. I’m assuming somebody either didn’t know how to tie their line properly, or didn’t cut and re-tie after catching some earlier fish.

Never considered doing this… Is that a common practice?

Run your fingers over your leader every few casts and after every fish. If you feel a knick it’s tie to re-tie.

It’s a very common practice for me. I seem to be able to find lots of ways to lose big fish even without nicked up line. I try to keep my line, rod guides and reels inspected. Then if the fish gets away I can blame it on a bad hook up. If they’re hooked good I can usually land them. I lost several fish on the hookset in a night tournament. Line broke on everyone I lost. Finally figured out that the end guide on the rod was grooved and nicking/cutting the line. That’s not good, especially during a tournament. Now I double check each rod before tournaments.

Fished with a guide in Georgetown once with my dad. We pulled up to a spot and saw a popping cork near the edge of the grass and asked the guide if he wanted us to grab it. He said yes it must’ve been snagged but as we got closer we noticed the cork started bobbing and moving into the grass and realized it was attached to a fish. After about an hour of fishing that spot, the last red we landed had a nice rusty hook in his lip and about a 3 foot leader with the cork.

My friend who lived up in Cross caught a 30-40lb blue cat at the Hatchery one night that had a nearly new (ie, non-corroded) crawfish crankbait in it’s belly. How on earth it swallowed the whole crankbait without getting a hook stuck is beyond me. We saw something odd shaped in it’s belly when we filleted it, and when i cut it open, the crankbait just slid right out.

Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.
