Spoon fed weekend

I got out with Steely on Friday to catch a few on down lines before they vanished at dark. I channeled my inner Murrymaker on Saturday afternoon and ventured out in the wind and waves in my john boat to the spot we were at the nigh before. After some searching I found them stacked up and went at them with my first real try at using a jigging spoon. Wasn’t long before I got hooked up on one, then another and another. Ended the day with 12 total biggest was 26, probably 5 keepers in the mix and the rest in the 18-20 range. With the size of the spoon, I was really surprised how many fish swallowed it. Sunday afternoon I went out for a bit with my kids and was able to jig up 6, but no keepers. I’m now a big fan of the jigging spoon.

I met some guys in the Diversion canal yesterday that were fishing for Largemouth with spineers throwing at the grass line. I watched them pull up 2 stripers in less than 5 minutes. I think they are hitting everything right now.

Steverino, when you are jigging, are you anchored or drifting?

I was drifting. I didn’t have enough rope in the boat with me to anchor up.

Welcome to the spoon jerkin’ club Steverino! As Crabjack said earlier, it’s quite addictive. Baitman David jokingly told me to stop promoting spoons to everyone:) Live bait is still #1 with me, but I always have spoons rigged and ready when fishing deep water. Getting good sized fish to nail a couple ounce hunk of metal is quite the rush! I like that Slammer spoon you’re using too:sunglasses: My favorite has become the Deadly Dick(no vulgar joke!). Check it out at Cabelas or Google it.

Have you ever tried them at night?

Curiously, I never have but don’t see why it couldn’t work. I would use darker colors on the dark side of the boat unless I had the entire perimeter lit up. Otherwise, the chrome spoons should work just fine. I’ve just always kept too busy keeping up with live bait rods while night fishing and don’t fish as much under the stars as you guys.

Nice catch Steverino, I think you did darn good for your first real trip jigging. I have never tried it,sounds like it can be addicting. What kind of spoons and weight do you guys use?

That was a 3 oz Slammer spoon. I was fishing 60-75 feet deep. In that past I had tried with lighter spoons, and I could tell there was a big difference with the heaver spoon where I could feel the flutter and solid bottom contact.
