"Spoon" Flies

Hey guys… I found a guy wh has been making “Spoon” flies from fake finernails… They look pretty good and he says they have a VERY spoony action in the water… I am gonna try some and post some pix… have any of you guys tried this before? Results? I found out my wife has some copper colored nail polish  She is gonna hate me when I start stealin her nail polish… wow… that is the gayest thing I have typed in a while… she already gripes at me for using the cats fur for dubbing…

post some pics… sounds interesting.

I’m always looking for cheap fish colored nail polish, looks I get at walmart checkout lines are pretty funny sometimes. My little girl has complained lately, she keeps “loosing” her metallic flake glitter nail polish… Glad she doesn’t pay any attention to my latest crease flies !

Cat hair dubbing hmmmm… against my better judgement. the family got a new kitten to torment my dogs… kitty might actually prove usefull after all.

this is the link to the guys site he gave me… My wife has a long haired persian cat and since we have to continually brush and comb him I have an abundance of very fine orange to cream colored fur around, the girls comb him down and put the fun on my bench. It makes GREAT bodies for nymphs and stuff plus I now have a neverending supply of it . It’s not bad for dries but once it gets water logged it takes a bit to get it floating again… Once I get some tied up myself I’ll post the pix…

I’ve done a lot of experimenting with spoon flies. Fake nails work OK but I’ve had bettter luck with other body materials. Getting the hook fastened to whatever the body is will be your toughest challenge. I add a wire weedguard and wrap the hook in thread all the way to the bend before I epoxy. That’s also a good time to add any hair or feathers and such. I also punch holes in the center of the body to allow the epoxy to fuse to both sides. I got that idea from the Dupre’s spoonflies. I mix fine glitter with the epoxy for color instead of painting.

You’ll need a fly turner. The motor from a microwave oven that rotates the dishes makes a perfect turning motor.

I didn’t get a how to from him… but I would assume they needed to be epoxied to the nail, good call on wtrapping the hook first, it’ll probably make a stronger bond… I was wondering if they would be too light or if I needed to wrap the hook with some wire also to weight it… I am gonna play with it and let ya know what I find out.
