Spoon setup

i have an 8 wt and I am trying to cast a spoon with it, and can’t really get any distance. This is my set up 20lbs mono leader 9ft then about 5 ft 10 lbs tippet. Any suggestions

Step 1: cut your leader back to 9’ overall including tippet… at most.

Step 2: cut the spoonfly off and tie on a real fly…

Step 3: catch lots of fish…

agreed…

Keep casting.

def if its a 15’ leader, its gonna be hard to turn over a sail likea spoon fly (like MM said) and if yer tossin spoon flies @ tailers, 6’ is more than enuff for a leader…in a rush, i tie straight 10lb mono to a fly line (short-like 5’) as a “commitment rig” and give emhell. esp with a quick/short presentation…i have plenty of shots w/in 30’ and a long leader hampers performance at such a short range.

spoon flies underperform at all aspects, until they are submerged and spinning in front of fish… at which time they become devastating. personally, dont like: the occasional very loud splash, sudden 3ft turn as twisted leader unfolds, and buzzing backcast noise. spoons are a great option for prospectin’, but if you can see the fish and need to put somethin’ on his nose, quitely, and quickly, try something else… Caves wobbler is the best of the bunch…

i like em. they will not go much distance but who cares. walk up to the fish. i would scrap that 10 lb stuff and just put on 20 straight flouro to help get it down. 5 or 6 feet is plenty. switch to mono if you want a topwater fly or popper. the good tides are usually in diminished light conditions and the fish are pretty locked in when they have their tails up. i had to wait a long time to actually land my first cause i had a nice tapered leader that went snap right after he ate the spoon. they work best in the sparser stuff but you can make one go through some grass.
i aint pure as the FF snow-- a fly is something you can cast with a fly rod. surf mullet make it bend funny so i dont use em. chuck and duck doesnt count.
