It was a little tougher than expected with the frontal passage. A nice morning though it took us from 7-9:30 to limit. 6 of the 10 were legit to around 7 pounds or so. Spoon was a quick study in grabbing the cranks first and not plastic worm jerkin’. 80 feet, a couple cranks off was the ticket!
Thanks for the help today Fog. After my HDS-10 died, followed by my trolling motor, followed by all of the bait, it was kind of a “frustrating day”, to say the least!! Not what I am used to!
The $999.99 charge to repair the HDS-10 was a little shocking also! It is about 10 weeks out-of-warranty! I do not know how they make things to fail, as soon as the warranty has expired. And, no, they will not cover it under warranty!
Good job fogman by the looks of the picture you are pretty close to where I was sat and sunday.I am here all week working with no boat it sucks also pop shot is here with me an old club member
Fog, Thanks again for a great morning’s fishing. I learned a lot today. Those bigger ones were about all I wanted to tangle with today. Next time maybe I will be ready for a bigger lake Murray monster. Sure was fun!!!
I had actually fished downrods years ago with live bream, but not nearly as deep as we were today, and had never fished with live herring before today. It’s similar, but a totally different technique for hooking the stripers.
We were on at the same time Spoon. Next time maybe we can hook some monsters on Murray, or you’ll have ride to the Hill with me for some “thumb burners!”
Another nice haul by the Fogman.
Just missed you yesterday morning. I saw you pulling away from the bait boat as I was backing down the ramp. My brother and I did well. Conditions were nice yesterday with the early cloud cover. I saw a lot of folks catching fish.
I just hope none of my bass club buddies find out that I spent about 2 hours in the shed today pulling out my old big reels. They now all have new line and are on 7’ rods, pre-rigged just incase Fogman invites me to try downrodding again. I had a great time yesterday!! I’m getting stronger every day, so I’ll better be able to land a biggun.
Thanks Jack! It was an average haul for Murray this time of year. Glad yall got some as well! Headed for the Hill in less than 8 hours to hopefully tangle with some bigger fish and get more recon for the upcoming tournament.
Oh no! Spoon’s got the fever now:smiley: … When looking for a good downrod, make sure it has good backbone with the last 3rd being flexible tip. The Ugly Stick Lights and the medium light Striper Rods are hard to beat… Glad you enjoyed the morning!
Hey Fog - did you see that chum cannon on shark week? That thing was awesome. Waiting to see somebody in MSC hook one of those up! Looks way more effective (and fun) than slinging bait out of a plastic baseball bat. Maybe Billy Durant, Big John or Shawn can design one just for MSC members since they really like to fish cut bait.
Plus, good for anybody on a water gnat that gets too close and in range…HAHA!!!
I’ve seen tin can cannons made using lighter fluid as fuel. They would probably work great except for the gas tanks in a boat. Even if they didn’t ignite the gas, a backfire would really be a chummy mess to clean up!
Yep Fog, You might have ruined a promising “young” largemouth fisherman. I’ve got several potentially good rods all are 7’ lights and medium lights. I tried to pick out the ones that had similar tip actions and backbones, like the ones we were using. All the reels I fixed up have light line and/or fluorocarbon leaders.
Monday morning was just what the doctor ordered. Downrodding as we were doing, with you doing all of the work on Monday, is a lot easier on these experienced legs than standing up all day chunking a bait to lockjawed largemouths. They say I might be allowed to fish another largie tournament in Oct. or Nov. That’s a long time off, and then it will only be if all continues to go well.
Fog, I got checked out today. Had gained 5 lbs. since last Friday. Blood work was a litle better too. I guess eating ice cream twice a day can sometimes have it’s advantages. I don’t have to go back for another checkup until Friday a week. Hopefully, the Doc will let me return to work soon. Probably sounds wierd, but I miss going to work.
I’ll be ready whenever there’s an empty seat available on the Hardcore Xpress. I’d like to try the rods I’ve set up and see if they’ll work as well as yours. Hopefully, there will not a really bad striper die-off, but from what I’m reading it doesn’t sound good.

That’s good news Spoon! If you feel up to it, you might want to ride to the Hill with me sometime.
