spoons and plugs 10/28

Fished with Seahunt0012 today from 1130 to i think 4 or so. started out around yatch cove looking around and moved on up the lake trying to stay protected from the wind. Usual spots were dead and figured it would be a long day. Finally found some fish in john’s creek.

At one point had fish blowing up the water the size of half a football field, but by the time we got to them were only able to get 2 of them and lost a couple more.

Beautiful day on the water. Only caught one short fish and that was trolling a rattle trap. Brought home 7 with an 8# and a 7# being the big fish. All fish caught either on spoons or plugs.

With having caught 2 nice fish in the last two trips probably means i will be lucky to catch a fish sat much less mark one…lol…tight lines ya’ll…

Funny thing is if we had planned the tx this weekend we probably would have cancelled due to weather. LOL

Nice haul!

That being said both days we went, today and friday, had lake wind advisorys in effect and both were a little windy but beautiful fishable days.

Very nice day on the water, top water fishing sure is fun. But like MurrayMaker said we will be lucky to get anything on Saturday.

Nice fish, I guess you found the spoons you were looking for. There is probably not a spoon over an ounce left on a shelf around here.

Funny u say that. I bought the last 2 sportsman’s had a week ago and they still havent put more on the shelves. Went ahead and bought some on ebay last night. Should behere in a couple of days. They have some good deals on them. Think i got 5 with a pouch for them for 30$. But have to put trebbles on them. They vome rigged with asssit hooks.

Sportsman’s is bad about that. Once something is out of stock it could be months before they have it again. Odd that in these times they don’t have an automated system that tracks what is sold and orders when inventory is low.

I was talking to one of the guys there lately and he did say he would put in an order. But if you need any soon, I would look online.

I believe Richard has some large Hopkins spoons.

I ordered a few last week from sportsman’s warehouse online. They had the same Slammer’s they had in the store as well as Hopkins and a few other choices. A few were even on sale.

Hey guys,

What kind of rod, reel, line combos do you use for fishing these spoons?

Thanks

What u are using for down rods will work fine. I have an abu 6000 on a striper ugly stick spooled with 20# mono.

Last couple trips i have been using an avet sx raptor on a short jigging rod spooled with 50#braid and 10’ flouro leader joined with an albright knot. It works even better. The braid lets u feel exactly what the jig is doing as far as fluttering goes. The mono isnt as sensitive.

The lighter the rod and reel the better. A good day jigging is a heck of a workout on the arms.

I’ve been using the same rig I use for fishing downlines. Baitcaster, 14lb test and about a 7’ MH rod. The rod is a cheap two piece shimano that I found on clearance at K-mart a few years ago. I like it because it has a little bit of backbone to it. I haven’t used my ugly stick striper rod for it yet, but that might work to. I’m thinking those rods might have a little too much give to them.

FYI - Lake Murray Hardware in Ballentine is carrying tackle again. I stopped by today to check it out. Not a huge selection yet but the owner told me he’s in the process of building it up. He does have a decent selection of Flex-it spoons, bucktails and umbrella rigs.
