Sportsman Boats and Hanckel Marine

In the market for a new center console with family features and am considering the Sportsman 211 as an alternative to Key West’s 219FS. What is the feeling around Charleston about the Sportsman product and the longevity of the company? Also, I would like to purchase in Charleston if I can make a deal I can live with. Who is your favorite sales person at Hanckel Marine and why?

Not sure about the price difference, but IMO you get a lot more boat with the Key West.

Extra 1’ longer, 21 deadrise vs. 15. I wouldn’t have a 15 degree transom in a big boat personally. Plus more fuel and Key West is a well known brand. Trim tabs standard. 20 gallon livewell vs 2 small 8 gallon.

The Sportsman should perform slightly better at getting on plane and maybe even slightly better top end because of the shallow V hull though. Just depends on if you just want a family boat, or something with a little more fishing comfort.

Personally I would stick with boats that are priced similar but should have dependable resale value. Key West, Scout, Sea Hunt, and probably even Tidewater over Sportsman.

Stretch, go talk with Miles. Very good guy with lots of knowledge.

you cant go wrong with either. one of the guys who started key west is one of the guys who started sportsman. in my view, that makes the sportsman line seem like key west, version 2.0.

Why not look at the Pioneer too. IMO it was nicer than either the KW or Sportsman. All those boat manufacturers have ties to one another. All of them build a nice product as well.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Not sure how I left Pioneer out of that list, seeing as how the Cape Island 186 is going to be my next boat.

Fit and finish on a Pioneer is way better than some of the other local boat builders. I would check them out for sure.

Pioneer is located in Walterboro ,Scout is in Simmerville, not sure where the KW is made, but maybe you can take a tour of the facility to be sure what you want.

Double D.

Key West is made in Summerville.

Scout, Key West, Tidewater, and Sportsman boats all have lineage together. Either family, old partners, current partners, etc. I wouldn’t let the relationship hinder or help the purchase. They are all unique in there own right and have pros/cons with each. Being associated with another brand doesn’t make them any better.

there is one off of 78 in summerville near the archery shop and there is one in ridgeville off 78 near carters i believe

I would put Sportsman boats on my short list if I was gonna buy.
I really liked the Sportsman 229 Heritage. Another boat that sticks out to me is the Cobia 217CC.

Im a huge key west fan. This is my third key west in a row.
They ride well, they are very reliable, and they are easy to repair.
if you plan on keeping it forever, keep access points and repair trouble in mind.

Take a test ride in sloppy weather. I frequently use a Pioneer 197 and find it to be a wet wet ride. Probably doesn’t help I don’t really use the trim tabs. Excellent fit and finish though. The Yamaha 150 is a good match with it too.

A pioneer 197 sportfish is still the hands-down best riding and handling 20ft boat I have ever been on in the ocean. Have fished them in 20kts NE winds in the winter and out to the 226 hole in summer. Tabs and an F150 will let you stay on plane in the ocean at 16kts. Curtains will let you be comfortable in anything another center console could possibly fish. You just can’t be in a hurry. I have never seen another boat that size stay on plane at those speeds with 73 gallons of fuel capacity and the kind of fuel range the 197SF has.

The best part of all is that you CANNOT physically take what it would take to break anything on a Pioneer. I have tried, and I can’t do it.

Some of the other boats named here are good boats for inshore. Pioneers are built bomb proof. There is a reason why they are so tough. Go to the factory and let Roy and Mike show you around, and you will understand how different they build boats. Different mindsets.

Roy told me to my face if I broke my Pioneer, I was still alive, I could still walk, talk and make coherent thoughts he would give me a brand new boat.

Redtide, how many CC have you been on in sloppy weather that were a dry ride without curtains. My 222 is wet as h

Honestly that key west looks like a crap fishing boat. If it is for the family/cruising, then it’s ok.

I’d much prefer the sportsman. Stern deadrise does not scare me.

Salty you shouldn’t take personal offense. Most boats ride nice on calm days. Perhaps it’ll tell him which boat he prefers. As I stated Pioneer does have excellent fit and finish.

LOL, some of the schhitt we’ve put mine through already would surprise you. No 19-23’ boat around is designed to be out in 4-5’snot for a joy ride. They’ll get you back but not a single dang one of them is going to be dry. I’m not taking any personal offense but I test drove every boat I was looking at on crap days for that reason, the Pioneer had the best ride of all of them but I got wet in every one of them.

I’m just curious as to what boat you recommend?
