Warning Spot users. If you are planning on updating to a new Spot device it will not automatically be linked to your Boat US account if your previous devise was linked. And they will not notify you that it is not linked.
I had my old Spot Messenger stolen last week. So I purchased a new Spot Gen3 and activated it today. I was told when I activated it that all of my settings would remain the same but just for peace of mind I went through all of my settings and made sure everything was correct. Everything looked good except for the help/assist button. It no longer had my boat information and it did not verify that it was linked to Boat US. After hours of searching and trying to verify if it was still linked or not I called spot. They informed me that the service is no longer available to link the Spot Messenger to your Boat US account. I lost it. I said how can you possibly not notify someone when they update their device that it will not be linked to Boat US?. If I had not double checked I would’ve gone on thinking that anytime I needed assistance I could press the help button on the Spot and Boat US would come and assist me. After explaining my concerns to the lady on the phone she told me that she could not help me and that it was not available. I told her that I needed to speak with the manager and he immediately linked my device to my Boat US account. He went on to tell me that Boat US and Spot will no longer work together unless an agreement is reached. He said that if you have an existing device it will be linked until your renewal date and unless agreements have been made you will not be able to link the two. I believe this is very irresponsible on both companies to not let the customers know that our towing company will not be notified if we need assistance. Very poor communication skills.
