Spot run is oficially OVER

It is with great saddness I deliver the regretful news. As you all know the recent storm has greatly reduced the salinity in our local inshore waters. As a consequence, organic detritus, small crustaceans, sea worms etc. have rapidly pushed further to out sea - well past the 3 mile line and mostly within the EEZ (12 to 200 Nautical Miles). This being the primary food source of Leiostomus xanthurus (aka spot) means the 2015 fall influx consisting of massive schools of the delicious, hard-fighting, jumbo 1.5 lb “bull-spot” is all but history.

I know how you are feeling about this news, “how can it be over - it was just getting good?” I can assure you - you are not alone in your grief. At this point all we can do is winterize our early eighties 9.9 - 40 hp Johnnyrudes, drain the bildge water from our 13 - 16 ft. fiberglass cathedral hulls, and oil up our Zebco 33 Platinum 5 Ball Bearing Spincast Reels in hopes of a bumper crop in 2016. It was fun while it lasted. On the bright side - word on the street is some of the lucky die-hards did manage 1/4 freezer full. My hat’s off to those who did! Can’t wait until next year.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

"jumbo 1.5 lb “bull-spot” …NOW I know why those rigs are made with 80 Lb. Mono.

I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it. I think I’m going fishing…!!

Shows you how dead this section of the board is now. 5 years ago we would have been up to 10 posts on this topic already…Everyone move…?

Glad I was never bitten by that bug! Probely a lot cheaper than shrimping tho!

Nice try, didn’t work.

It’s not over until they quit coming, whether catching or not.

Bull spots… lol, that’s great.

For real. I’ve been away for a couple of years because I sold my boat but now I am back in the game and this place is a ghost town. Hate that.

It may be after today…only seen a hand full left overs and nobody catching…???

I hope not, we’re planning on fishing tomorrow.

Spots were biting pretty good Saturday. We limited out with no problem.

Sorry boy’s,
Front page todays Waccamaw Times:
Spots attract anglers to Murrells Inlet, just in time for the weekend.

Very suprised to see a few still caught in Charlie today…not hard and steady but a few…

Point is, it doesn’t matter if the spots are here as long as the spot fishermen are still here. I have sat out the last two weeks at least, hell of a time for the house I was allowed to tie up at to sell; going by yourself and getting back on the trailer… lord lord.

Just saw the latest update from SAFMC. Latest studies show spot are overfished and considered borderline extinct. Closing the rec season for the next 5 years. This sux

Wow

We’ll be back in the game Saturday. Looks like the weather is going to be nice.
