Spot Tracker?

I’m curious of the range of a Spot Tracker. The new orange locater beacon type thing… WOuld it work offshore?

Nothing but a “SMART-ELLIC”!

I watched a boat crossing from Ft Pierce to Little Abacos Bahamas from my desk in North charleston

Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.
Lights On!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of dust with a rod in one hand and a beer in the other,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming…

WOW -WHAT A RIDE!!!

Smily - could you give a couple details of how that works?

SeaPro 23 WA Yam 225
High Tide 16 Honda 40
Key West 17’ Stealth Yam 115

Any drawbacks to these things?

Got one and love it. It has worked very well for me this fishing season. It uses satellites to communicate so as long as you can see the sky you should be able to send a message. It has saved a lot of worrying from the wife when I have come in late and given me a piece of mind while fishing on others boats. It is VERY accurate with its positions. Here is a screen shot that you get emailed a link to.

Just keep in mind it sends location in lat/lon DECIMAL!! NOT MINUTES!! This has caused confusion on this very site. The information is the same and is easily converted. It is just shorter to read and therefore text.

If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.

It works great offshore. I use it every trip. Sent a msg to ppl on my list to contact seatow recently, and seatow came over the VHF trying to reach me minutes later.

THe drawbacks are that you will need to practice using it to get used to how it works. You do not know for sure if msg’s get through or not.

For the cost and what it does I have been very pleased with mine. However, DO NOT expect it to take the place of an EPIRB. It serves a different purpose and function. It does some things that an EPIRB can’t like let people know where you are as often as you send them messages and send them non-life-threatening help messages, and it cannot do some things that an EPIRB can like floating in the water and sending a real time position signal to rescue boats.
