Spring Flounders - When do they show up?

Howdy,

First post.

I recently moved to Folly from Annapolis, MD and am working on figuring out this great fishery. Some of my flounder fishing buddies from the Chesapeake Bay are talking about coming to visit in the springtime. Can anyone comment on when a good time to invite them would be? When does the flounder fishing get good around here? Folks are making vacation plans, etc., and I’d like to get something on the calendar. Hopefully, when the fish are biting, the wind gods are cooperating, and it’s warmer than it us up north.

Thanks!

Chad

The large ones migrate back from the Gulf Stream when the water temp is around 68 degrees…Late March…April time frame. Summer time is the best.

Thanks, fellas! Coxdatiger, that DNR article is way cool.

Lrobalo, in the Chesapake Bay, there is no flounder fishing to speak of until around Memorial Day. This is good news. We used to drive to Wachapreague, VA, on the Eastern Shore, on about April 15 to get 'em. Great place, but not too many keepers the last few years with the 19" minimum size.

What do y’all think it would look like in the middle of April here around Charleston? Good enough to invite some company? Or, push it back until later in the spring like middle of May?

Here’s what the flounders look like on the Cheaspeake Bay.

We also have Stripers (up there):

Folly Chad… the Chesapeak Bay is cool for sure but we have plenty of fish here in the south. However, fishing on a deadrise is ultra cool. I’ve always thought a fast deadrise would be the ulitimate bottom fishing for Charleston.

There are some great local shops that will always answer any questions you have. Haddrell’s Point Tackle and Charleston Angler are the first to come to mind but there are others too. Good Luck

Unless you guys are really hell bent on catching flounder, I’d think about having them down to target some redfish. I’m a novice, but IMO, it’s something they don’t get to do up there and more likely to have some good action…and they fight so much better.

We’ll look for the reds too, but these are my flounder fishing buddies. Been spring flounder fishing with these guys for years. Even have a permanent hall pass for it. So, we better come home with some delicious flounders or the boss will think we just spent the day at the bar.

It’s been really fun figuring things out here at Folly. I figure the fishing must be pretty good because I’m new and we’ve been catching a few in the past couple months. Just like anywhere though, it takes about 20 years of doing it all the time before you get good at it. And then there still a’int any guarantees.

Thanks to everyone for their ideas.
