Springtime Trout

We are just getting into my favorite season of year for trout.
I have posted a new report on our site with some insights.

As always, an entertaining and informative report. You never fail to deliver.

In the future, where every stranger poses a potential threat, knowing the predator mindset is the only safe haven.

Optiker, Im coming down to the charleston area on the 26th of March. I remember in an earlier post saying that March is your least favorite month of the year to fish. What can I expect fishing wise during those last few days of the month? Thanks in advance and great post as per usual.

matthew typically March is tough for me because fish are in a transition phase and a little hard to pattern, plus around the full moon we typically get a worm hatch, and the couple days after that the fish seem to shut off a bit (probably the fish are stuffed to the gills, IDK) You will be down about 4 days after the full moon, so that might not affect you too much. I’d expect there will be a good topwater bite by then in the AM and late PM.

Just to add to optiker’s post above,I typically do poor in March too. I’ve found moving around more aggressively using multiple lures/baits (mostly artificial) helps this time of year vs sitting still with shrimp and corks like I may do in the summertime.

Optiker, will trout tricks fare well in a tackle box or do they last longer when stored in the original bag? Planning on getting an order of the jigheads from you pretty soon.

I’m not Optiker, but I prefer either leaving soft plastics in the original bag, or combining multiple small bags into a larger ziplock. I quit putting soft plastics in a tackle box/tray 30 years ago.

millacd, NEVER put Z-Man ElaZtech in a bag with regular (PVC) soft plastics. They do NOT play well together. Always keep Z-mans together, preferably in the original packaging.

Sounds good, just curious. Sometimes when I go fishing, I like to pack very light (as in all my terminal tackle could fit in a hand-sized box) but varied in type so sometimes I try to eliminate excess packaging if possible.

A little flour from your kitchen on the plastics keep them all in great shape.I mix a lot of plastics to save room.A flour dusting works for me.

I found some trout up a creek at high tide today. Hanging in about 10’ of water. Caught them all on Shrimp Po Boy color Trout Tricks

Optiker were you working the Zman and Trout eye with the Trout Trick presentation?

From the RPIS posting- Do you have a suggestion of a site to learn more about this worm hatch?

RLS - A MinnowZ can be worked like a TT but IMO it would not be as effective. What I do is slowly reel and make small blips with my rod tip while reeling. Let the paddle tail do the work. Its easy to reel too fast and thus the lure will rise too high in the water column. Keep it slow. Paddle tails create a lot of drag so it doesn’t take to much speed for them to rise up too high.

Re: worm hatch, do a search on this site for “worm hatch”. Should be all the info you need. Full moon in March and/or April they will be everywhere for a day or two.
