Squirrels - Making the best of downtime

Took my oldest daughter (7) and brother in-law out to Hellhole this weekend to help control the squirrel population. Hunted that morning and saw 27 squirrels, and 2 had the desire try a little bit of lead. Mostly trying to teach my daughter(s) how to squirrel hunt and they are liking it just as much as deer and turkey hunting along with fishing. Afternoon hunt saw 10 and 1 did the high dive as well. Trying to master the laser and scope setup so that my girls can get the hang of doing this event and so far the laser setup has helped with where she is aiming at in relation to sight placement. Didn’t have that when I was young but thank goodness I can solve problems. Great weather for it! On a different note this year has been the first year deer hunting I have noticed a few squirrels going back to the nest way late (Dark) and happen to see it again when we were coming out of the woods when two ran across our path at 20 feet in darkness. That’s when the laser helped out again!

What are you shooting them with?

Ruger 10/22 semi. Kill’em at 25-60 yards when they sit still long enough. Got the gamo laser mounted underneath the barrel so that when my daughter is aiming I too can see where the cross hairs are at. Again just another invention / tool to help teach / train young kids to shoot. Attaboy is what I’ve received for doing this and it makes me smile since I can get my daughters slinging lead faster at an earlier age. As long as they keep smilin’ doing things that I am exposing them to then I must be doing something right!

The laser as a training tool is cool! Squirrel hunting can be a blast! If your finding that a lot of your shots are out past 60yards you might think about upgrading to a .17. Just remember to take head shots if you want to eat anything.

I’ve let a lot of people shoot a Ruger Mark III i’ve got with crimson sight. It really lets a person know just how much they are moving on target. For some that think they have a steady hand, it’s been quit a humbling experience

I’ve got a laser on my 10/22 also, love it. Wish I had one when I was a kid.

Having a laser on a gun for accuracy is akin to having a Captain that doesn’t even know what a sextant is other that some new fangled term from snapchap.

Open sight rifle, and a sextant to navigate is the only way to go for purist.

lil’ NutCracker Larry carries a sextant, and an open sight bottle of whatever you had in your liquor cabinet…

I’ve still got a sextant, and an almanac and a set of sight reduction tables. Know how to use them too and have navigated around most of this hemisphere with them. But I considered myself very lucky if I ever knew where I was within 10 miles or so, sometimes lucky to even know what country I was in  When LORAN was invented I bought one. When GPS was invented I bought a few of those too.

I can shoot a firearm just fine without a laser, but can shoot it better with one.

Please tell me you haven’t got LNCL a paddle board for the low lying areas on your property…
