Running out of St Helena, this would apply to any Edisto or Fripp guys, where do y’all normally run? I used to fish out of MI with a buddy and always go to the Gtown hole, but now have my own boat and run out of St. Helena. Last year we went to the Edisto banks, seems like the closest spot, but wondering whether its a better bet to hit the 226 hole or deli. I’m sure it all depends on where the weeds and temp breaks happen to be that day- but is one generally more productive than the other? Thanks
I spent about 4 years fishing out of South Edisto and Saint Helena and I can tell you that the Deli is a haul and a half from A buoy out of Edisto or the sea buoy out of Saint helena. Our most productive Deli numbers were about 88 miles from both. I know the big boys do it a lot but fishing a 34 cc a 2.5 hour ride in the dark at 30 knots is along way, for me anyway. we only went that way early season or when the bite was going off down south.
The deli has a lot more bottom relief and less pressure not to mention you get to the fish before all the Charleston guys so its awesome early season, but we split time in both places especially after the gas price jump. If you can get a good calm day then I’d say head south and try it out, you can find fish in both places. As a side note, running Helena can get really nasty on a ripping outgoing tide and east-southeast wind coming from the Deli but you can always tuck into Port Royal and run the ditch back.
For what its worth, a lot of fish are caught between Edisto and 226 on relief and live bottom spots when the temp breaks and bait coincide. you can always push out towards the 120 fathom line if need be, gas is just too expensive for us to run over fish without testing the waters if we signs of life.
anyway, slightly inshore of 226 is where we normally point the bow is the high season when we don’t have any recent reports.
I hate to put it this way, but if you have a big enough boat, gas tank, and reliable fishing buddies head to where the fish have been caught recently or just north of the area. An extra 100 bucks on gas to 226 or the Deli beats sitting with the reels quiet at the Banks with boats on top of each other all day.
