My friend has a 14’ Boston Whaler with a 40 hp two stroke Yamaha (2000 model) engine. He keeps it well maintained and recently had the yearly service issues addressed. Also, filled gas tank with non-ethanol gas from Exxon in Summerville. Boat fired up and ran through the gears at home with mufflers prior to launching. Once boat was in the water, it would only idle. Any attempt at getting on plane resulted in immediate shutdown. Needless to say, frustrated friend went home, fishing trip ruined, and sulked a little. Went back outside, put on the mufflers, fired up and it ran fine. Any ideas as to this mysterious behaviour?? Thanks, Mike.
Engines run differently under load/in gear than just idling/out of gear. Sounds like either starved for fuel, carb jets are out of adjustment, or some fuel/water issue. Check the the plugs arein good shape and tightend fully, esp if new ones were recently installed, they need to be fully seated.
Mine did something similar Wednesday. Idle sounded funny and cantanerous, but was running. Hit the throttle and it was ugly…bad ugly. I figured fuel filter was clogged.
Sent my friend to West Marine for a Racor Filter and his house for tools and swapped out the filter. Back to the harbor, hit the throttle. Nasty.
Friend suggested a spark plug was off. “Naw…couldn’t be that!” Checked it…spark plug indeed was off. Put it back on, boat jumped up and ran like a scalded dog.
Yeppers…I killed 2+ hours. Friend was good natured about it. (as far as I know
)

mixing the non ethanol fuel with ethanol, is worse than just using the ethanol

quote:Chris, I've seen others allude to that before as well. Why is that? It seems that adding nonethanol fuel would just mix with and dilute the ethanol. Is there some chemical that's added at first and looses its capabilities after it's mixed? I'm just trying to figure this out.
