star drag vs lever drag for live baiting

Wanted to hear the CF crowd’s personal opinions and preferences between using a star drag to lever drag. Primarily going to be using it on the west coast live baiting schoolie bluefin/yellowfin and such. A lot of times fly lining with no weight is the best method, don’t really know if that would come into consideration or not. Just want to hear some of your feedbacks. Thanks!

My opinion being the star drags are out of date nowadays still usable for what you are doing. The modern lever drags are just easier to use for the average angler and lighter weight. I have both and tend to use my stardrags for grouper or shark fishing set the drag tight and hold on.

If you do like a star drag I would tell you to check out the Shimano Tourium they are great for bump trolling the bottom. Im in Islamorada so its a bit different fishing down here but they are great star drag reels very smooth and light!!! Good luck!!!

Agreed about the star drag being out of date. With lever drags you always know how much drag and pressure you are putting on the fish. With star drags you have to go by feel alone to know how much drag to apply after the bite. I have lost too many big fish thinking i wasn?t applying enough drag on the stars, and when I applied more, it broke off. Don?t get me wrong, star drags are still functional and will do the job just fine but the newer lever drags are the way to go if you are going to be doing marlin or tuna fishing. Just my opinion of course.
