Start motor when flushing????

Repowered last year with a 200 Suzuki. Should you start the motor? It would seem to me if you don’t start the boat. would never open the thermostat & flush that area out??

I am fragile.
Not like a flower.
But like a bomb.

I ALWAYS FLUSH WHILE RUNNING , PUT FOOT IN HORSE WATER TROUGH AND LET MOTOR PUMP NORMALLY , I DON’T TRUST MUFFS !!!

I have a Suzuki also, I hook the water line to it and let it get running through the system good then crank and run it for a couple of minutes then let the water run through it some before I disconnect the hose. About 5 or 6 minutes total time.

Running water tru the flushing port only sends the water tru the block, you will burn up the water pump by running the engine!

I use old school muffs on the intake.

As said before the flush port on modern motors is designed only to be used with the engine off. Also you have to be careful using muffs on some larger outboards. I live on James Island and have a Yamaha F250 and I cannot get enough water flow/pressure from my city water supply through a set of muffs to cool the motor.

Are you using round or rectangle muffs? It make’s a difference. Round only for big motors.

my yamaha engine manual says to connect water hose to the flush and muffs if running while flushing. Muffs alone - it will overheat alarm after a couple min. I use a h2o hose splitter to run water to both. Works great.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

DEFINITELY RUN THE ENGINE

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING

Since the question was asked about flushing through the “water line”(threaded flush attachment)

What if your outboard water pump impeller fails…why couldn’t you hook a salt water washdown hose to the “water line” and come on in???

So that explains the loud noise my motor made the other night. I was wondering if I had not put enough pressure on the hose. It took a long time to start peeing.

My granddaddy used to have this contraption he made for flushing. Instead of ear muffs he had two pieces of metal that would clamp on either side of the water intake, making a tight seal. A pipe came off the side to attach the hose. Between the hose and the metal clamp there was a pipe going up. That pipe was open on the top at roughly the level where water would be if the boat was in the water idling. So as long as water was coming out of the vertical pipe, you had enough pressure. Any extra pressure would be released as water flowed out of the vertical pipe.

If you screw the hose into the flush port on the motor and run the hose motor off, does the water wash out through the intake at the bottom, or just the pee hole?
