start-up issue

90 HP yamaha 2 stroke. I’ve been having problems getting it started. It’s intermittent. The engine won’t turn over. I’ve replaced the battery, put new connectors on the battery cables and I thought that was the fix. But it still, on occasion won’t turn over. There’s power to the trim/tilt, the bilge pump and the fish finder, but when I turn the key on the ignition, nothing. I jiggle the throttle back and forth, turn the battery cut-off switch back and forth, turn the key and sometimes it starts. When it doesn’t, jiggle some more and try again. Today it happened again, and right when the thunder storms were starting to move it…turn the key and nothing. Mean time there’s booming going on a few miles away! Jiggled everything some more, and it turned right over. Can’t figure it out. Is it the ignition, the throttle, battery switch?

Any ideas before I take it in to the professionals??

not limited to 90hp, the 70hp Yamaha 2-stroke on my skiff does the same thing.

2002, very low hours, garage kept, regularly maintained, no rust/corrosion whatsoever.

?

First thing I’d check would be the lanyard kill sw ; pull one side of
its wire off , if motor starts most likely sw is corroded…

Check your neutral safety switch

2004 150hp 2 stroke, happens occasionally. With mine I think it is in the ignition connections where the wiring harness connects to the wiring going to the back of the boat. A few jiggles and I’m on my way. Has not happened in the better part of a year…knock on wood.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
