can anyone recommend a good starter fly reel and rod combo for fishing for reds and trout
I have a Ross Momentum number 4 reel that is AMAZING, the drag is great and holds up extremely well. You really get what you pay for. I have a Orvis 8wt TlS Power Matrix (tip-flex) (908-4) that is great but I have only used one other fly rod but I can cast about 75 yards with two false cast with mine so it cast great.
I hope I have been helpful and if you have any other questions just reply with them.
Wow DP… 75yds huh… thats 225 feet brother… you can really lay it down… or you have a really bad sense of distance… I’m gonna put my money on the latter of the two… 75 feet would be more realistic…
as for starter combos… there are alot of prefab ones out there, most are crap but there are a few good ones to be had. You’ll be looking to spend around $250-$300 for a good saltwater starter setup… Gimme a shout, or swing by one of our shops (the charleston angler) and we will be glad to talk it over with you, and give you some ideas and options…

im thinking about trying this one out, i wanna go redfishing somewhere in the flats with a fishing guide soon and i wanna try fly fishing with him
quote:If your gonna be fishing for reds with it then I recommend an 7 or 8wt. You could catch a red on a 6wt but the 8wt has more back bone. If your fishing for trout mainly then go with 6wt. Also there are many great guides you can choose from that will take you fly fishing like Mike Abel Jr. (www.Abelmindedcharters.com) and JR Wates (www.fishcall.com) also Chris Wilson (www.charlestonflyfishingguide.com) If you want to talk to someone about a rod and reel you could go to Haddrells and they would be glad to help. Also Charleston Angler.

You can pick up a good TFO 8wt for about $140ish, a reel that will “work” for around $100 and a good fly line will be about $70… there are less expensive options out there, there really are but like I tell new people to FF… get good solid gear to begin with and it will be easier to learn and you won’t need to upgrade any time soon and you get to the business of enjoying fly fishing. mad Miek at he MT P TCA is the MAN, if you have questions give him a ring, at the WA Store talk to Josh or Colt and I am at the s’ville store… anyone of us will give the straight poop on what you need wether we have it or not. Thanks nikonjedi, well i got a little extra cash so i can spend up to 300 what do yall recommend for fshing around here for reds and some big trout. Im acutally thinking about taking the fly class at tca
What do you mean what do we rocommend for fishing? Do you mean what are some good flies?
rod and reel wise, the momentum is nice but im not gonna spend 450 dollars
my recommendation is go to TCA and ask questions and get a feel for the different rods and the balance with the reels.
TFO is one of the best starter rods out there considering developing your cast and price. chas angler also has a redington combo - great rod but i dont know anything about the reel. i also recommend going to chas angler and tell them your price range. they will set you up

Couldn’t have said it better The Redington reel is OK, notthing to write home about but it’s solid enough if you take care of it. I have a buddy who bought that combo 2 years ago and it’s still kickin hard. Okuma makes a SLV that is pretty bulletproof. It’s a $60 fly reel but it is solid. It’s still not a Nautilus or an Abel but it’ll do ya just fine. I have been fishing several of the in the salt for about 4 years now and haven’t had a single problem.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Ross Flyrise($110)? I’ve been looking and think it’s down to the Flyrise and a TFO rod for my first fly set up.
You can luck into some deals. I just ran across an Orvis clearwater 8wt for $100. I have always been more a fan TFO, Sage and Winston, but I felt the Orvis was a deal I couldn’t pass up.
One other thing to remember: The premium rods also tend to have lifetime guarantees. That really pays off. I once broke a $650 Winston boron and I just about had a heart attack (it wasn’t mine). Winston replaced the broken section instantly and without question. The premium rod brands really stand behind their product and have great customer support. That Winston was super sweet. I can’t pay that for a rod, but using it I sure could appreciate it. It was a 5 wt and no kidding, I instantly casted better with it than I did with my $150 5 wt. Just didn’t want to put it down, the way it laid line out…
I have an Orvis Clearwater II 8wt w/ a TFO reel used only a few times I’ll sell ya for $225
You don’t like it?
