I have a friend with a 25hp 4 stroke Suzuki and has been having issues with the starter. He just replaced it from burning up the old one cause the old one had no protection but I advised him to fuse this new one and now the new one is blowing fuses a lot. I’m pretty sure he said he has a 40 amp fuse one it and I told him that seems a little overkill but I dont know! Its blowing the 40 if the engine doesnt start on the first or second attempt. Any one deal with anything like this or have any advise? Should it be on a larger fuse?

Where does he have the fuse? If it is between the battery and the starter, thats his problem, should be straight wired…

Seriously? No over current protection on a starter? I figured that was why the old one burned up and with the price of those things he should protect it!

I have never seen a fuse on a starter. Both of my boats, truck and the wifes car are all straight wired. Straight wired is a bad term. He should have a cable going from battery to Started Solenoid, then from solenoid to starter, but no fuses… Especially a 40amp, way to small…

What he said^. A starter pulls major Amperage.
What he said ^^^. as in hundreds of amps.
