occasionally, the starter will just spin. the sprocket?? that is supposed to raise up and turn the big wheel to start the motor -sometimes does not raise
so, i use a screw driver, jiggle that sprocket - then give it another shot and back to normal
my question is - Is it time for a whole new starter or is it something simple? like a lifting srping or something
thanks in advance:smiley:
I think the part youāre referring to is the Bendix, maybe not. Generally the gear is forced up the shaft, to the flywheel, by centrifugal force. A good cleaning and lube should help. If not it should be a cheap rebuild at a local starter shop. Hope this helps, Scott

MN,
thanks. iāll try cleaning & lubing. then move onto the rebuild
Your very welcome, hope it solves your problems!
Arenāt they all pretty much the same? (outboard starters) I donāt want to post info. that is misleading to anyone. As Iāve said before, Iām no marine mechanic. Although, I can repair about anything that keeps my ājunkā on the water, on the lawn, or on the road! Now get on that and spin a wheel. Seeya, Scott

Try Decaf - I'm starting to miss Hop....
I think I will!
My apologies for being a smart, or dumb, āa$$ā. Iāll try to refrain in the future! Seeya, Scott
Could be a weak elec connection/battery not giving enough ājuiceā to the starterā¦

the newer 60 degree omcs have a completely seperate bendix, and it doesnt even come with the starter
salt hunter could be correct, but yes, you can change just teh bendix, and you dont have to rebuild the starter

10/4 my friend, Iāve already said āSORRYā!! Didnāt mean to ruffle anyones feathers! In the future I will refrain from posting on the āBOATS and MOTORSā page until I am a āCertified Marine Mechanicā, living in the only place where boats and motors have problems!!! By the way I have a Merc.? for you.
Ithaca37, Seek, and yee shall find!!
RIP Hoppy!!
mixednutz,

anybody want to recommend the lube i should use for this application
a real light oil grease might make it hang up IMO

Lithium Grease! Just a touch!
Chris, I think my feathers are always ruffled since my Dr. changed my blood pressure meds. Not looking for any enemies here! And my thoughts are sincere, in trying to help fellow boaters,
and fishermen. Just seems that someone always wants to āPUNKā you down for trying to help! Maybe I picked the wrong battle, and apologize sincerely! You never mentioned my Merc.? Oh, by the way, If Yakin4reds can take a screw driver and monkey with the bendix, and it works. I donāt think he has a battery connection problem. Seeya, Scott
