Went to start the Evinrude this evening( had been about two months since it ran)
At first, nothing happened. I cycled the gear shift from forward, to neutral, to reverse, then back to neutral, the motor turned but didn’t fire off I’m immediately, but then again it never does. Tried to fire it up again, and nothing but a loud hum coming from the solenoid? or starter? Any ideas are appreciated. It is a 1990 30 hp Evinrude two stroke. Thanks

make sure the battery is charged
if its charged, take a screwdriver and push the starter gear into the teeth on the flywheel and try to start again
make sure you remove screwdriver before trying to start
Played with it again this afternoon. The negative battery cable is almost in half, and as I was trying to get it to start, the wire was getting very hot, so I quit. It also won’t run. I could get it to fire, but wouldn’t stay running. It has some older gas in it, so I I’ll be getting rid of that, and putting in fresh. It needs the carbs cleaned, as the last time it was out, it didn’t want to act right. I had a hell of a time getting it to start after launching it. Then when I got back to the landing with my five year old in the running truck, I couldn’t get it to start at all, and ended up paddling it to the trailer. If that damm thing wasn’t “unsinkable”, I would have pulled the plug right at the dock.(end rant)

I have a whaler with an 85 evinrude 30, same issue. Bite the bullet and replace batt cables and clean carb, From new, mine would drag starting. The original zip type cables are undersized and non-tinned. Move up to #2 wire and never look back.
