Starting Issue

Let me start by saying a big thank you again to everyone who helps me with my assortment of boat issues. It is always greatly appreciated. I have an 02 90hp merc. 2 stroke. The boat cranks very easy on a cold start. It seems to have a harder time when it is warm. I pulled up to the dock today and turned it off while I went to get the trailer. When I tried to start it up I had to really rev it up in neutral to get it to start. Even after that it sputtered, spit, smoked a little and then started. I am used to just turning the key and it fires right up. I just put new gas in a couple weeks ago, the carbs were done last October. Any suggestions? She runs great at idle, and WOT, just the starting…

How does it run when its started at idle?

Seems like the floats maybe flooding it?

No problems with idle or anything else. Would that be something that was changed/adjusted when the carbs were redone? Thanks

could be a synchronization between the 3 carbs, or a piece of trash in the seat of one carb, letting it stick open, and flood

I am going to take it out tonight and see if it does it again. Will definitely give you a call if she still isn’t running right. Still enjoying the fact that she idles since you worked on the carbs!

Guess I should take the idling comment back. Died on my three times tonight. It was the only three times I put it in idle. It is still better than it used to be. I used to put it in neutral and it died right away. Now I get about 10-15 seconds of idle before it quits, so I rarely put it in neutral. The first time it died it fired right back up. The last two times when I cranked it up I had to throttle it up in neutral to get it to start. I absolutely love the way my motor runs, but for the life of me I hate taking it out when I can’t trust it to idle. Pulling up to docks, and trailering are a PITA! What to do, what to do???

my 90 merc is almost the same way. had a flooding problem last summer so rebuilt the carbs and ran fine until couple weeks ago. now its spitting and sputering at idle and will shut off if you don’t kick up the idle lever some. been through two gas lines in 9 months so i’m blaming the ethenol. if i can ever run the fuel out i’m e-free from then on.

sounds like your fuel system has some more debris in it

You are not the first person I have talked to that has trouble with idle. My buddy had the same problem. Not sure what his mechanic did but I will have to ask. I will recheck the filters and see if I can find any restrictions. Could it be the mixture is still too rich??? When or should I say if I ever get my boat to idle correctly, that will be the day. I get jealous of those people that leave their boats idling while they get their trailer. I do that and come back to a boat that is not running. I guess I do save gas that way!

it really starts to work on the confidence when it runs like that though. do you mix your oil or still use the vro system?

I use the VRO, thought about switching. What do you have? Curious as to what you meant about the confidence??? Mine is shot, especially trying to put on a trailer with woodposts, rocks, and everything else close by to hit!

have you rebuilt your fuel pump lately? Ethanol is doing a number on the diaphrams.

Have not done that. Is that an expensive fix??? Thanks for the advice.

are you using a fuel/water seperator? if not then should be. i had same problems with my 99 70jonny. started using a seperator and it helped big time

I do have a seperator on it. Thanks for the advice. I probably only have about 10 hours on the new filter. Worth taking off and changing??? I do not have the racor or the signt bowl…
