Starting someone on the addiction

I have a new fishing partner, Martin, and he had had no luck landing a redfish on a fly. He was getting pretty frustrated. Even though he does not think so, he has been getting better, and I knew it was a matter of time. I sent him to a flat yesterday morning, and he called me really upset. He said he must have seen at least 25 redfish on that flat and didn’t manage to land a one. He had two takes that both came off, a little buck fever I think.

Luckily my schedule today let me take the morning off…I tied him a gold crab fly yesterday evening, sharpened the hook and bent the barb in.

Went with him to the same flat that I sent him to yesterday…and finally his first red on a fly :sunglasses::

Not only did he manage to hook and land his first, but his 2nd and 3rd as well:smiley:. He caught all of them on that gold crab pattern that I tied him last night. His biggest was 22 inches.

I also managed to catch 3 fish, and break off another, although my biggest on this day was 19". I caught mine on a brown and tan crab pattern that I tied.

All in all a great morning. My only concern for Martin now is that He does not understand what he has started…I think he is hooked for good on reds on the fly. There is nothing like sharing such a passion with someone.

Thursday I will be teaching how to tie that gold crab pattern, and after that we will be trying to get his 12-year-old daughter hooked up on a red.
