H-3735, the BSB legislation passed the full AG committtee today and is going to the floor for second reading. That’s great news.
Also,
South Carolina’s Truth in Seafood Act was introduced yesterday. This requires that restaurants and markets tell you the truth about what they sell. In other words, if you sell it as fresh local seafood, it better be fresh local seafood. This will take the disadvantage off our commercial fishermen and shrimpers. Right now, they are competing with LOTS of asian product that are being marketed as “Fresh Local…” I personally would pay more for local seafood. I think many of you would too. This bill simply asks for the seller to tell the truth so we, the consumer, can make those decision for ourselves.
Call and write your Reps and Senators and ask them to support these bills.
I am very glad to see a move to require seafood to be honestly labled, and the true origin known. I just hate it when a restaurant advertises “local grouper” and when the plate arrives its actualy swai or panga at $24 a pop. Its so dishonest and very unfair to the good operators that spend the money on quality local seafood. I hope the new law will require operators to display the origin of ALL seafood . The public will get a wake up call about how little shrimp is actually “local” in the marketplace. Hopefully this will get the consuming public to understand how out of control the SAFMC is!
Great work!! But will the Fed (SAFMC) trump states rights.
From the meeting tonight in N Charleston its looking like the train has left the station.
It doesn’t matter. This resolution simply tells the SAFMC how we (the legislature) want them to vote on VMS issues. A copy will go to members of congress and the governor. They aren’t bound by the resolution, but it sure puts a burden on them now, especially the ones from SC.
Right now it looks like a tie vote - which Crabtree will certainly break in favor of VMS. Any chance of getting our neighboring states to follow SC’s lead? Will this push cupkas vote?
Who the Hell knows what NC will do…That place could rival Louisiana as far as inshore just like it does offshore, but they allow all of that netting still. The eastern part of NC is frozen in time it seems. You would think Georgia would be right in line with What we are doing. This is all a nightmare. My brother was in the keys fishing this past weekend and talked to some fisherman and apparently many of those guides have gone rogue. They will do their best to turn us all into criminals.
