Stealing Bait Stealers

I was out on Sunday afternoon to fish around the low tide. Bait stealers (pinfish, crabs, & all other annoyances) were annihilating my bait within seconds of each cast, whether it was mud minnows, crab, or shrimp. I have had this happen before, so this time I came prepared. I rigged an ultralight 4.5’ spinning combo with a small single hook and a mud minnow head, then proceeded to catch a couple of those pesky pinfish.

Those bait stealing pinfish quickly turned into the reds’ favorite meal, and I immediately started hooking up with slot fish and a couple that were larger. The bloody, oily meat (I cut off the spikes for the reds’ sake) really did the trick. Seems like the pinfish skin is tough enough to keep the crabs/minnows/etc from ripping off the bait. Now I need to figure out how to use a cast net so I can stop bringing along the ultralight combo…

Oh, and I hope that no one figures out where this spot is… the buildings might give it away

Roll Tide. Nice fish…

Nice redfish. Did you fish the pinfish live?

Ever try fishing from the top of those buildings … seems like it would be easier than paddling a kayak

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

Roll Tide linthead! Should be plenty of chances to fish this weekend given it’s Bama’s bye

LocalHero: I cut the pinfish into thirds and caught a red on each piece, so it seemed like all that mattered was the fact that it was cut. Each time, the rod tip did the dance of some little fish playing with it before the redfish scared them away and picked up the bait.

The buildings make for a long cast, but some really good sight-fishing can be had from that angle.

Will be in Mobile this coming weekend . Send you contact info to ho4bama@hotmail.we hook up and fish before it gets too cold to paddle around.

Good trick. I’ll remember that next time I’m faced with the same problem.
