steel cased 9mm ?

Alright. I have never really been a fan of steel cased ammo so i have only fired it a few times out of my buddy’s ar 15, which had no problems with it what so ever. I will not shoot it in my Colt AR because I have heard all of the bad things that it can do to the gun over time. For example: due to the heat(especially when rapid firing), the lacquer or polymer coating that keeps the steel casing from corroding can come off during the extraction process and cause the gun to have problems extracting/jamming later on. I have read that the new steel cased stuff (with the polymer coating) doesnt do it like the old lacquer stuff does. However, I have also heard that the polymer stuff will come off and cause problems. Also,I read the steel case doesnt expand the same as brass and that could also lead to problems in an Ar-15. So, I only shoot brass out of my AR and wont be shooting any steel from it.They say that all Ak’s will eat steel cased up no problem. So, apparently it just depends on the specific firearm as to whether or not shooting steel cased ammo is a good idea or not. Now, with all that said, here is my question. I have a Taurus PT 911 9mm, which i just got a few months ago and I absolutely love. I bought some steel cased 9mm because it was very cheap and I figured what the heck. Even if i dont shoot it, ammo is good to have around. I havent shot it yet and was wondering if i should? Could the coating, the hardness and different expansion of the steel cause problems similar to those it is said to cause in AR’s? My gut tells me not to shoot that Russian garbage out of any of my guns. Well except for maybe the Mosin-Nagant. Anyone have any thoughts about this? IF all of that stuff is true with the steel in an AR, which it makes sense to me that it could happen that way, would you fire it from your gun? Sorry, for such a long question and I appreciate any input.

I have the same 9mm on my nightstand. I have shot the steel cases out of it and it is fine, as is my Ar15 that I have shot steels out of. The main thing is to clean your weapon very good after shooting. I now shoot all brass because I reload all of my own cases.

I fire the steel rounds out of my SKS Assault rifle. Cheap fun. I have not noticed any problems. I do clean my guns after shooting them. I have a 40 MM Taurus Millenium edition pistol. I have not shot the steel rounds through it . But I would if I could find any.

[:0][:0] Dang!

I’ve shot many hundreds of steel cased 9mm in my Springfield XD without any issues.

The biggest problem with the steel cased ammo that I have found is it being under powered for some guns and very dirty. The dirty part comes mostly due to unburnt powder. Most people that have problems are experencing cycling issues due to the ammo being under powered and it can really dirty up a gun quick of course also causing some type of malfuction. AR’s being gas operated need the gas to blow the bolt back so under powered ammo will usually cause a failure to eject the spent round. As posted above keep the gun clean and some guns may need something a little more stout to cycle the action properly. With all that said I have run steel cased ammo in all my guns for years. With the prices of ammo including the steel cased stuff I made the move to reloading myself several years ago. I have a surplus of steel cased stuff I shoot on days I don’t feel like picking up brass. I sent you a Pm check it when you get a chance.

When I go to the range and I am just plinking, I bring the cheapo stuff with me. I thoroughly clean my weapons every time. My AR requires more cleaning and is a much longer process than any other weapon that I have.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses. Just read the pm’s, very helpful and informative. For some reason i miss those things. I clean all of my gums well. I even bought a special brush for my Ar’s gas port.

I use steel case ammo at the range all the time. 9mm, 45 ACP, and 7.62. Never a problem cause I clean after every trip. Plus my SKS just eats that ammo up. It was made to gobble steel cased ammo.

Our range only lets us brass now. They claim it’s too big a hassle to separate the brass from the steel for reloading.

That’s the norm for AR’s due to the “direct gas” system. When I was in the Army National Guard, if blanks were ever issued for training, I wouldn’t fire a single round if I could avoid it due to the hassle of cleaning.

However, the new piston-operated AR’s are the opposite. SO EASY to clean. Mine is made by LWRC but there are others. Clean the bore, wipe down the inside, add a little oil and done. I can’t even tell it’s been fired except for the bolt face and the bore.

If the brass is truly brass then it is non-magnetic. They could use a magnet to pick up the steel case ammo, then sweep the remaining brass in to reloading bin.
