Steering Cable Questions???????

At least once a year I find my steering cable getting stiff (no jokes please) and I am forced to clean out the tube as best I can, relubricate it and hope for the best. Perhaps I am not using the best lubricant as I find a gummy mess when I go to clean it. Can someone tell me what is the best lubricant to use on the steering cable so the tube doesn’t get all gummy?

As it turned out, I ended up pounding the snot out of the rod that is attached to the steering cable and pulling it out of the tube on the motor bracket. I scrubbed it (the tube) out with a 12G shotgun brush and cleaned it out. It appears to be a little pitted/corroded. Can this tube be easily replaced? Trying to avoid the same mess in a year.

Thanks

there is a marine grease that I would use…helps with water…also using it more will help prevent this…:smiley::smiley::smiley:

whats the length you have know on the steering tube? I have several steering units at the house you can have if your problems continue.

once the corrosion/rust starts, only real fix, is to replace tube.
there is a ream you can use to do a better job getting it cleaned, and then put a grease fitting on the tube, and it will definately help

Is replacing the tube a major pain? It appears that since the motor pivots on that tube that the motor would have to be supported while replacing the tube. Is this corrcet or am I seeing things wrong?

Thanks

PS: gdaddy, I will measure the tube and holler back at you. Thanks!

df, yes, you are correct
