Steering Cable

Boat’s been sitting for about 8 weeks, and I’ve been meaning to turn the wheel…Sure enough went to check it yesterday and steering was stuck…didnt’ force it that much, but something snapped, and steering wheel is spinning now, and motor won’t turn…I’m hoping the cable is OK, and it’s just lost linkage or connection under the console…Does motor have to be taken off to replace steering cable? How can I tell if it’s the cable or just the gears under the console?

will need to replace your steering. what usually happens is the helm looses grease and the gears will strip or it gets gunked up back at the engine with rust etc and cable sheeth will end up stripping off of cable. Helm and cable(s) are sold as a package. Do not have to remove engine. Takes an hour or so depending on boat. Ive done CC and bass boat…both offered unique challenges. Dont forget to tie rope on end of cable before pulling through (disconnect at motor end of course) Leave rope in boat for pulling new cable(s) back through. When pulling cables through, mind any electrical wires you may have routes with cable(s), may also have to put a small amount of grease on cable(s) to reduce any rubbing that could damage sheeth. May have to drill a hole or two in console for new helm…no biggie. New steering comes with everything you’ll need including hardware and bezzel. If you have any specific questions ask away, steering is fairly basic so dont be afraid to dive into it.
