I’ve got a scout with a 90 HP Yammy 2 stroke. Just had the steering cable redone 15 months ago. Use the boat over thansgiving and no issues. Just went to turn the wheel and it’s frozed. Need advice on how to free it up without breaking the steering cable…thanks.
I meant frozen, not frozed before y’all call me out. I need help, cause I’m ready to go fishin!
I’m assuming you have taken the control arm loose to determine it is in fact the cable and not the motor.
What type of cable drive is it? I had a piece of one tooth break on a rack/pinion cable once and it locked the steering down.
No, I haven’t. I suspect it’s the motor and not the cable since the cable is pretty new. How do I take the control arm loose? Cable goes in on the starbard side. Do I loosen the bolt on the port side?
I’d be willing to bet it is where the arm goes into the tube on the motor. Mine freezes up in the winter. I pull it apart annually, clean it out with a 12 gauge shotgun bore brush, relubricate it and put it back together.
I agree DF…My concern about disconnecting the steering cable, is that because it’s a tight turn, the motor had to be taken off to install the new cable 15 months ago…So, how do I loosen up the arm??
Got it loose. I just unscrewed the big brass bolt on the port side, opposite side where the steering cable goes in…Gave it a good tap with the hammer and it loosened right up and I gave it nice doseg of fresh grease…Pretty simple fix, thanks for the replies.
